Soil remediation is sometimes accomplished using a process known as “pump and treat,” in which contaminated groundwater is removed and purified using activated carbon.
The soil can also be extracted and filtered to remove various contaminants. Then both the soil and purified water are put back into place. Soil remediation can also involve solidification where activated carbon is added to the soil to reduce the contaminant’s mobility.
When a contaminated site needs to be cleaned up, via remediation, activated carbon filter vessels are usually used (often in combination with sand filters) to remove unwanted organic contaminants from the soil & groundwater. Carbon filters may also be used to remove VOCs and other odorous compounds in the gas phase, which can be released during the remediation process.
As ‘brown-field’ sites are increasingly in demand for new residential and commercial developments, groundwater and soil remediation will continue to be an important and growing market for activated carbon filtration and related services.
